Relationship

The one prevailing theme throughout the bible is relationship.

Life is relationship. Our relationship to God, others, ourselves, money, possessions, nature……. 

As he was starting out on a trip, a man came running up to Jesus, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what should I do to get eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. But as for your question, you know the commandments: ‘Do not murder. Do not commit adultery. Do not steal. Do not testify falsely. Do not cheat. Honor your father and mother.”  “Teacher”, the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was a child.” Jesus felt genuine love for this man as he looked at him. “You lack one thing,” he told him “go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come follow me.” At this, the man’s face fell, and he went sadly away because he had many possessions. (1) 

What is the one thing this man lacked that prompted Jesus to ask him to give up his possessions?   

He lacked freedom from his possessions. His possessions meant everything to him. Who would he be without them? They owned him. And they held him back from experiencing the joy, love, peace and freedom that a relationship with God provides.

What is your relationship with God, people and things? 

Peel away all that you have. Your possessions, your title or status in life, your talents… What is left? Who are you? 

We are created by God to serve God. 

Life and it’s “dressings” are a gift from God. God asks us to use these gifts to build positive, loving relationships with God, ourselves and others. Ask God to show you how He would like you to use the life he has blessed you with. Give your life back to God – God I thank you for this life you have given me. Help me to use it to serve you and those you bring into my life. 

Spend time with the words on this page. Chew on them in your mind. Carry them in your heart. Give yourself time to answer the questions for you. When you do this, you will find peace, freedom, love and joy as you are drawn closer to your Creator.
