Insights on Living E-letter
August 2004 issue
Faith
Faith is a very powerful
word when we really think about what it means. I think of myself as having deep
faith in God. However, I find worry seeps into my mind when challenging
opportunities enter my life. So, how deep is this faith or should I say how
shallow!
Faith is trusting our
lives to what we believe. “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you,
whose thoughts are fixed on you.” (1)
Do I trust my life to
God? I sure do when things are going well. That is real easy. The test for
myself is when those challenging opportunities come into play.
I have been learning
about my faith in small and big ways. For example: finding a parking space in
the parking garage at work is very difficult if you leave at any time during
the day because there are more people working in and visiting the building then
there are parking spaces (the company is growing and just purchased a building
next door so this won’t be a problem soon). Anyway, as I approached one of the
parking levels, I asked God “should I bother going down this way?” The response
I heard was come forward. So I did. Yet, in my head I was saying, “there is no
way a parking space will be on this level at this time of the day.” Well, there
was a space and it was close to the building! I laughed and apologized at the
same time.
My faith was pretty
negative because I believed that there would not be a parking space. I trusted the small voice within me
to “come forward” yet I did not believe. I am at many times a “doubting Thomas”
because the expression associated with him, “seeing is believing”, rings true many
times in my life. Yet, Jesus loved Thomas and allowed him to touch His wounds
to dispel his unbelief. It is comforting for me to know that Jesus is saying to
me, despite my unbelief “come forward in your faith, I will lead you, teach you
and love you all the way.”
God works with us on the
small things in life to train us to trust Him with the big things in life.
My dad’s surgery was one
of those big things in life. His surgery was scheduled on a day I would not be
in town. I had to decide whether to go on the trip or not. I prayed a lot and
listened even more and decided to go on the trip. Canceling the trip would have
come from the fear that something negative would happen and I believed that God
was taking great care of my dad. The night before the surgery my husband called
to tell me that the surgery was rescheduled. This time I smiled and thanked God
for showing me that my faith is deep because I do trust God with my life and
the lives of those I love. I give all of them to God in prayer. Who better can
take care of them. Some live close while others are far away and His love
covers all regardless of where they are.
Faith is a free gift.
And God wants us to have it because when we trust our lives to Him, our lives are
easier, freer, peace filled and joyous. These things are the fruits of faith. And
these fruits of faith are given so abundantly, they overflow and spill out into
the lives of those who touch our lives.
Come forward in your
faith. For when you do, you will experience and share its fruits.

Peace and Love,
Barbara
